BUMBOO - MAKING

Though "Bumboo" is on the brink of release (March 30), director Jagdish Rajpurohit has not forgotten his roots - the theatre world. "That's where I started my career," he says with a smile.

Having acted in plays like "Juloos", "Holi", "Dak Ghar", "Annoyance", "Open Couple" and "Dedh Inch Upar" to name a few, Rajpurohit feels that theatre and cinema are on the same mission - to tell a good story. "But I chose to delve into cinema so that my story could reach millions of people, and that too, with a technique that would be closer to reality.

He adds, "Cinema starts and ends with a good story - the treatment, technology and business fall somewhere in between. If you insist on having just stars, and come up with special effects, but no story, then all you have is a substandard product that will make the audience do nothing but yawn."

No wonder most of "Bumboo"'s lead actors like Kavin Dave, Sharat Saxena, Sanjay Mishra, Sumit Kaul and Sudhir Pandey are from the theatre world. "Theatre not only helped me become familiar with the craft of acting and direction, but also sharpened my skills to choose actors that lend true depiction to my characters," he says, adding, "Theatre will always be my first love, but cinema is my new love, and as any loyal lover, I am not letting go of one for the other. But right now it is "Bumboo" that's on my mind."
