EK THA TIGER - MAKING

Here’s a classic case of role reversal. For many years, the industry has been rife with talk of how Salman Khan went out of his way to help Katrina Kaif make a place in Bollywood. But now, in an interesting twist, Kat has seemingly been instrumental in getting Salman his role in Ek Tha Tiger, his first Yash Raj film.

Confirms Salman: “To start with, it’s a fantastic film that Katrina got. And in fact, she was the one to — in a way — get me in Ek Tha Tiger. (At the start) Katrina was the one to tell Kabir (Khan; director) to come and meet me (regarding the film).” After 2008’s dud Yuvvraaj, the romantic thriller pairs the two after a gap of four years.

Ek Tha Tiger will also have him team up with Kabir — who directed Katrina in New York (2009) — for the first time. “I had watched some of Kabir’s videos when he was working on Kabul Express (2006).

At that time, he had showed me a few shots – which he had canned — on DVD. A guy named Apoorva Shah used to work with Sohail Khan Productions. And since Apoorva and Kabir are good friends, he had got Kabir home once. When I saw his work, I had realised — immediately — that he has got something in him,” says Salman.

The Dabangg (2010) star admits he was the one who asked Katrina to take up New York: “When the offer came up, I remember telling Katrina, ‘Do this film. This guy (Kabir) is very good.’ As far as Ek Tha Tiger goes, I liked the script a lot, and so, things worked out.”

The film is expected to release on August 17 this year.

Ask Kabir about Katrina’s role in getting Salman on board and he laughs, “Salman must have been joking. I don’t think anyone needs to suggest his name for a film. Kabhi kabhi woh tedhi-medhi baatein kar deta hai (sometimes, Salman ends up saying random things). But nothing of that sort happened.”

After dancing to chartbusters like Chikni Chameli (Agneepath, 2012) and Sheila ki jawani (Tees Maar Khan, 2010), actor Katrina Kaif wants to do something different. The actor recently played the role of a diving instructor in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), and shot an ad film underwater in Thailand for a popular mango drink without any diving gear to support her. She will now be seen performing full-fledged action scenes in at least two out of four of her forthcoming projects — Ek Tha Tiger, Dhoom 3, Yash Chopra’s Diwali release and Dostana 2.

Katrina has supposedly already shot a couple of punch-and-kick sequences for Ek Tha Tiger with Salman Khan, that too without undergoing too many workshops and rehearsals.

“I just wish I continue to play loads of different characters because I get to learn so many new things. I have shot some really exciting stunts in Ek Tha Tiger. It was an electrifying experience for me. I don’t think I’ve done something like this before,” she says, refusing to give away the details. “The fun is lost even if I remotely describe the scenes. But I have to admit that the action is challenging.”

When prodded about her rumoured underwater fight scenes, and a spicy item song with Aamir Khan in Dhoom 3 that rolls out in June this year, the 27-year-old actor says, “Dhoom 3 is an action-packed film. It’s a successful franchise that has superb cinematography, songs and action scenes. But without shooting for it, it would be unfair for me to tell you exactly what I’m going to do. You’ll have to wait and watch.”

Meantime, the actor has decided to give her one-song appearances a break for now. “I’m happy with all the appreciation that came my way for Chikni Chameli. We worked really hard on it. By the time we wrapped up the shoot, I was extremely exhausted,” recalls Katrina.

“But it’s all been worth it. Right now, I’m focused on the two films I’m shooting, and the third that I will start soon. And there are no plans for any other solo song appearances.”

Bollywood hunk Salman Khan may soon be seen promoting Cuban Tourism. The actor has shot a small sequence for an advertisement while he was in the country shooting for his upcoming film Ek Tha Tiger. When a filmmaker approached Sallu, asking if he would pose for a few pictures for the advertisement, the actor immediately agreed and also approved the photos on the spot.

The Capital seemed to be the favourite shooting location for Bollywood in 2011, with big films choosing the city as the backdrop for their cinematic stories.

From the end of last year through the month of January, actor Ranbir Kapoor and filmmaker Imtiaz Ali literally shifted to the Capital for the shooting of Rockstar. They filmed across the city, from Nizamuddin Dargah to St Stephen’s college. “What I like about the city is that it has many layers to it. There is no one particular place that you can point out as the essence of Delhi. For example, Karol Bagh is very different from Punjabi Bagh or Vasant Kunj,” Ali had said.

After shooting for their film Band Baaja Baaraat last year in Delhi, actors Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh were back in the city this year to shoot for Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl at Janpath and Central Delhi.

Last month, actors Arshad Warsi and Minnisha Lamba were in town to shoot the film Zilla Ghaziabad, which is being produced by Vinod Bachchan. Though the team had a great time shooting in the Capital, their stint at the Qutub Minar caused quite a flurry, as Warsi wrote on Twitter that the crew had to pay the authorities a bribe to continue with the shooting.

But that didn’t stop Bollywood superstar Salman Khan from making a beeline to Delhi for the shooting of his film Ek Tha Tiger a couple of weeks ago. Sallu was spotted filming scenes at India Gate and Rajghat.

The other films shot in Delhi include Jannat 2, Love Breakup Zindagi, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and actor Saif Ali Khan’s Agent Vinod. “Delhi is my favourite place to shoot in the whole world and it has the best hotels to rejuvenate after a shoot,” said Khan, while he was here in March.

Even Hollywood found its way to Delhi. Filmmaker Mira Nair was in the Capital with Hollywood stars Kiefer Sutherland and Liev Schreiber to shoot for The Reluctant Fundamentalist.

The shooting of Salman Khan starrer Ek Tha Tiger took place in the high security Parliament Street area in Delhi on Saturday. The film, being directed by Kabir Khan, also stars actor Katrina Kaif. While Salman’s scenes are being shot at various locations in Central Delhi over the weekend, the Delhi schedule does not feature Katrina as yet.

Ek Tha Tiger marks the entry of Salman in the Yashraj Films banner, known to be a strong bastion of rival Shah Rukh Khan. The film, in which Salman is tipped to play a secret agent, was earlier shot in five countries, including Ireland and Turkey.

The scene shot in Delhi on Saturday shows Salman, clad in a black shirt and trousers with a bag slung over the shoulder, with a visible injury on the face. The film was earlier slated for release in June 2012 but is now pushed to August.

Actors Salman Khan, 45, and Katrina Kaif, 27, who landed in quake-hit Turkey on Sunday to shoot for Kabir Khan’s film Ek Tha Tiger, are safe. A source confirmed that they have decided to continue shooting there despite the quake

Actor Salman Khan does not want to break the chain of good luck that has come his way with his Eid releases in the last three years. After Wanted (2009), Dabangg (2010) and Bodyguard (2011), he has now pushed the release of his film Ek Tha Tiger to Eid next year.  Another touted reason behind the delay is a request by fellow star Aamir Khan, as Aamir didn’t want it to clash with the release of his Reema Kagti film.

The Yash Raj production, starring Salman and his ex-flame Katrina Kaif in lead roles, will now be released during Eid instead of its scheduled release on June 1, 2012. “Eid is considered a lucky time for Salman as his previous films, Wanted, Dabangg and Bodyguard, managed to cash in on the festival hype and rake in the moolah at the box office.” said a source at Yash Raj Films.

Directed by Kabir Khan and produced by Aditya Chopra, Ek Tha Tiger is currently being filmed in Dublin from where it moves to Turkey.

Currently in London, Katrina Kaif’s happy that her Ek Tha Tiger co-star is doing well after surgery, gearing up for shoot of Kabir Khan’s spy thriller.

ZOOM      ZOOM

Three years after the disastrous Yuvvraj (2008), Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan are set to shoot another film together. Sure, they gyrated to the title track of Bodyguard, but as Katrina points out “that was only a 20-second appearance and Bodyguard was actually Salman and Kareena’s (Kapoor) film”. But Ek Tha Tiger is a lead role for which director Kabir Khan always wanted her.

“He narrated this great story to me three years ago, when we were filming New York (2009). His films are an interesting mix of fantasy and reality and I immediately agreed,” she says, adding, “Salman agreed on his own without us talking about it.” The spy thriller flags off in Dublin. Salman’s currently in London post his surgery in New Jersey. Katrina, after the premiere of Mere Brother Ki Dulhan in Abu Dhabi on September 7, air-dashed to London for another premiere the following day. From Tuesday, they start shooting for Ek Tha Tiger: “I’ve been told Salman’s doing well and we’re on schedule. We go to Cuba next, that should be amazing too.”

From December 15, Katrina will start work on her fourth Yashraj production. This one is opposite Shah Rukh Khan and will mark Yash Chopra’s comeback to direction seven years after Veer Zaara (2004). “I’ve always aspired to be a Yash Chopra heroine, who’s the epitome of elegance and grace. I loved Silsila (1981) and Veer Zaara. It’s such a thrill to be doing a romantic love story with Yashji and Shah Rukh, with whom I’ve never worked before,” she says. “I really liked him in Swades (2004) and Chak De! India (2007).” It’s been 11 years since we first saw her on screen in Boom (2003), followed by a cameo in Sarkar (2005) and a heroine’s role opposite Salman in Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya (2005). Then she was dismissed as a  firang with an anglicised accent, unsuitable for desi girl roles. Today, she is Bollywood’s numero uno star. She smiles, “Our audience is kind and accepting. They liked what I could do and forgave me for what I couldn’t.”

Ahead of his maiden tryst with Yash Raj Films, actor Salman Khan has already caused a tittle-tattle in B-Town. Even before Kabir Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger goes on floor, the film has been delayed. And according to hearsay, it is the Dabangg star, who postponed the first schedule of the film, which was apparently set to start on July 5.

Buzz has it that Salman’s upcoming film, Bodyguard, co-produced by brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri required extra dates, so the actor’s next, Ek Tha Tiger, has been delayed. Yash Raj Films’ spokesperson, Rafiq Gangjee, confirms that the film has been pushed, but merely by ten days and not a month. “Yes, we start shooting on August 10. The schedule has shifted due to our own production requirements. It has nothing to do with Bodyguard. We have always had our production schedule,” says Rafiq.

Sources close to Ek Tha Tiger add that they were set to hit the floors from August 1. “But since we need to shoot for only a few days in August, we can afford to reshuffle the dates a bit. We will start the main outdoors only in September. And we want Bhai (Salman) to start absolutely fresh. So we want him to take a week-long break because it doesn’t make sense to start shooting immediately after Bodyguard,” adds the source

For the uninitiated, Bodyguard is touted to be a big Eid release, following suit of Salman’s past hits like Wanted and Dabangg that too were released during the festive season. When asked if Bodyguard is running behind schedule, Atul denies it. “It’s not true. We are on track to complete and release our film as per schedule. We were always supposed to finish our film by the end of this month. In fact, I am happy that we have managed to be on track for the release. So there’s no question of needing extra dates for my film.”
